Leslie Morris Bailey was born in Wicken on 23rd March 1899 (Newmarket Q2-1899 3B:531), the son of Martin Henry and Sarah Jane BAILEY (née GRANFIELD).
1901 census...Aged 2, he was at High Street, Wicken with his father Martin BAILEY [34] labourer; his mother Sarah J. [33]. sisters Winifred [11] and Olive [3] and brothers John [8] and Cecil [4]. With the exception of Leslie, the family were born in Wicken. This census, alone, records his birth as Burwell. 1911 census...Aged 12, he was at North Corner, Wicken with his parents (father a factory hand), brothers John (gardener domestic) and Cecil (labourer), sister Olive and two new sisters, born in Wicken, Esther [9] and Blanche [4]. Leslie is recorded as born in Wicken. The pension card has his mother at Pine Cottage, Wicken in 1919 |

He enlisted in Newmarket.
Dying of his wounds, no Army records found and also the nature of his unit, it is unlikely we will find when and where he was wounded. On February 14th 1918 the 56th,57th and 58th Machine Companies were re-formed into the 19th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps in the 19th Division. The 29th and 46th Casualty Clearing Stations were at Delsaux Farm in October-November 1918.
